Top Outdoor Activities That You Can Enjoy With Your Family

Family vacations can become too boring. You may be outdoors and in a loose environment but there can be no new activity that you can do. Fortunately, here are some ideas that can help you spend some quality time with your family.

Obstacle courses can be the easiest to do. You can look for a wide enough space to play your game. You just have to choose what types of obstacles you are going to use. These obstacles may be appropriate for older persons. But for kids, you may also use these types of activities. You can just adjust the level of difficult. Getting down and dirty on the ground can be fun to do. A carefree attitude can make your activities even more fun. But if you are worried about the difficulty and safety of such obstacles for really young kids, you can modify the activities. You can make use of something like trying to shoot or hit balls into a goal. You do not need to install the obstacle for every team. Letting one team go at a time can make use of less resources. You can just fight for who has the least time used when completing the whole obstacle.

A game that can be related to an obstacle course is a relay game. This activity is not only fun, it might also be able to foster teamwork among the participants. Again, you have to consider the age as well as the capabilities of those who will enter the game. The level of difficulty which you are going to have in your game should be based on what you expect the participants can complete.

Incorporating water into your games can provide a lot of fun. Activities like this can be best to conduct during the summer months. Getting wet can reduce the amount of heat that anyone is experiencing. A playful fight in the pool can be a good idea. If you don't have a swimming pool at home, you may make use of a large enough kiddie pool. Water balloon fights may be possible as well. Thomas Aquinas's Five Proofs of the Existence of God

Five classic arguments from medieval theologian and philosopher Thomas Aquinas are among the most convincing proofs of the existence of God.

The existence of God has long been a subject of great interest to people around the world. Numerous theologians, philosophers and everyday observers have advanced arguments for and against the likelihood that an all-powerful Deity reigns over the universe. Five of the most resilient arguments heard in this long debate came from the brilliant mind of thirteenth century philosopher and theologian Thomas Aquinas.

Thomas Aquinas (also known as Thomas of Aquin or Aquino) was an Italian Dominican priest of the medieval Catholic Church. The name "Aquinas" is not a surname, but rather a name given to him by virtue of his place of origin. Born in A.D. 1225, Thomas would grow to become one of the foremost theologians in pre-Reformation Europe. Thomas was a prolific proponent of natural theology and was immensely influential in western thought. Much of modern philosophy owes a debt of gratitude to Thomas's writings.

Building on the logic of legendary philosopher Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas outlined compelling reasons for people to embrace the existence of God. Thomas Aquinas's arguments for God consisted of:

Argument from Motion - There is motion in the universe. Since nothing can move itself, an external agent or force is/was necessary to cause or instigate the motion that is in the universe. Embracing Aristotle's reasoning, Thomas Aquinas dismissed the possibility of an infinite regress of forces. There must be (in the words of Aristotle) an "unmoved mover."Argument from Cause - Based on the premises that every effect has a cause and that everything that begins to exist or happen is an effect, the cosmological argument holds that there must be an ultimate First Cause. After all, an infinite regress of effects is nonsensical. An original cause had to start the train of effects.Argument from Perfection - The universe contains a pyramid of beings (from simple, basic organisms to advanced organisms such as humans). This "ever-increasing degree of perfection" points toward a final being that must be perfect and ideal.Argument from Design - The world contains an observable order or design. Such design cannot be attributed to the object or objects in question. There must be an external Designer to account for the complexity of life and the order of the universe.Argument from Necessity - Everything that exists does so in relation to other things. Within this observed network of relationships, everything that exists is dependent on something else. However, an infinite regress of such relationships is contradictory and impossible. There must be a "necessary being" which is contingent on nothing else for its existence.

These five arguments for God's existence have endured to become hallmark defenses of monotheism. These arguments (or variations of them) are in evidence in virtually every work of monotheistic apologetics. Though they have been challenged by atheist writers over the centuries, none have been fully refuted. Their staying power is testament to their credibility, to the brilliant mind who conceived them, and the faith he embraced.

8 Tips for Setting Goals and Achieving Them

Goal setting is critical to achieving success and happiness in life. With proper discipline and focus, one can set goals and achieve them.

"Everything you see around you in the man-made world began as a thought or an idea in the mind of a single person before it was translated into reality," writes Brian Tracy in his classic besteller Goals! Those thoughts and ideas were brought to reality through discipline, focus, and creative energy -- things that are unleashed only when ideas and wishes become goals.

Goal setting is critical to personal happiness and success. "Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible - the foundation for all success in life," writes Anthony Robbins. With the importance of goal-setting in mind, here are eight tips to help anyone set and achieve their goals.

Many people feel trapped by mistakes and failures of the past. They refuse to forgive themselves or others for the pain and disappointment in their past, and are reluctant to look ahead. In his book Become a Better You, Joel Osteen writes: "You cannot change the past, but you can do something about the future. What's in front of you is far more important than what is behind you." Leave the past where it belongs. Learn from it, but determine to break free from it and move ahead into the future.

Many people are full of excuses and reasons why they don't have the life they want. Rather than investing time and energy in making excuses for life's disappointments, they should instead invest in moving forward. That begins with taking ownership of your life and assuming responsibility for your present situation. As Harry Truman famously said: "The buck stops here!" It may be that others have influenced your life or that obstacles beyond your control have entered into it, but it's still your life.

Most people have heard the adage: "Garbage in...Garbage out." There's great truth to that. If one fills his or her mind with pornography, he/she will be sexually obsessed. Fill your mind with TV shows, movies, and music that key on and encourage anger, and anger will permeate your mind each day. Continuously talk about all of life's problems and all the bad situations you deal with, and your mind will manifest depression and anxiety. Instead of giving into the negative, decide to fill your mind with positive, uplifting input. Listen to positive, inspirational music. Read constructive, encouraging, and helpful material.

To the extent you can, choose to develop relationships with people who will help you become a better person. Don't hang out with people that bring you down. Surround yourself with positive people. Make sure the people around you are feeding you positive input and encouraging you to engage in constructive, positive behavior. Too many people sabotage their success by hanging around with people who drag them toward mediocrity and failure.

Success guru Brian Tracy writes: "Your values are what make you the person you are....The greater clarity you have regarding your values on the inside, the more precise and effective will be your actions on the outside."

The preceding tips are all foundational. With this tip, one begins to actually advance toward goal achievement. Do not say "I want to lose weight" or "I want to make more money." Instead, declare you want lose 30 pounds and make an additional $20,000. Be specific. Make the goals measurable.

It's important to write down your goals. Otherwise, they are wishes into which you've invested very little. By writing down your goals, you've invested time and thought into them and helped crystallize them in your mind. Consider enhancing your goals with pictures to add even more power to them.

Follow up your goal-setting with the development of a comprehensive and thorough plan to achieve each and every goal. "All goal setting must be immediately followed by both the development of a plan, and massive and continuous action toward its fulfillment," writes Robbins in his book Awaken The Giant Within.

Setting and achieving goals is the mark of truly effective individuals. Those in the habit of setting and reaching their goals are among the more balanced and happy people around. By laying in the proper mental foundation and then powering your goals with focus and careful planning, you can realize many more of your goals and desires, while enjoying amazing benefits in your life

How to Read and Understand the Bible

People often ask, "How can I read the Bible and understand it?" By following these rules for interpreting the Bible, one can understand and enjoy the Bible.

The Bible is the world's bestselling book, and yet it is also one of the most intimidating, controversial, and misunderstood books. Not surprisingly, many people are afraid to dive too deeply into it and some don't even know where to start. For such people, it isn't simply "What's the best way to read the Bible?," but rather "How can I read the Bible and understand it?"

Those choosing to read the Bible, especially for the first time, should follow these rules for interpreting God's Word:

Before reading the Bible, it's important to know the answer to the following question: What is the Bible?

In his letter to the church at Ephesus, the Apostle Paul assured his readers that they were as much a part of the Christian faith as those who had been converted in Jerusalem. Paul wrote: "Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone..." (Ephesians 2:19-20, NKJV).

Paul described the Christian faith as having been "built on the foundation" of divinely-inspired teachings, given by the apostles and the prophets - and by Jesus Christ himself, who is the "chief cornerstone" of the faith. Today, Christians have a written record of those teachings in the Bible. The Old Testament constitutes the teachings of the prophets, while the New Testament contains the life and teachings of Jesus Christ as well as "the apostles' doctrine" (Acts 2:42).

Simply put, the Bible is the written record of God's revelation to the prophets (Old Testament), through Jesus Christ (the Gospels), and to Jesus' appointed apostles (the New Testament).

Without a healthy, reverential fear of God, the quest for wisdom and knowledge will be thwarted. That's one of the core themes of the book of Proverbs, and it's emphasized in several of its passages, including:

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction." (Proverbs 1:7, NKJV)"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." (Proverbs 9:10, NKJV)"The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom, And before honor is humility." (Proverbs 15:33, NKJV)

Having a reverential attitude toward God means that such readers will approach the Scriptures with humility and a readiness to submit. They won't come at the Bible with chips on their shoulders or with a determination to twist its meaning to serve their own agendas and purposes. To properly understand the Bible, one must have a heart of worship, obedience, humility, and reverence toward its Author.

While there are certain doctrines or themes within Christianity that can be easily grasped by even a child, there are many other aspects of Christianity and passages in the Bible that take patience, discipline, focus, and work to decipher and fully appreciate. It is for this reason that Paul urged Timothy to "[s]tudy to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15, KJV).

The Bible was not dictated by the Holy Spirit to ancient scribes, so that it could be easily understood, with little effort, by audiences from all cultures and time periods. In fact, only a few, very small portions of the Bible were formally dictated by God. As Christian scholars Norman Geisler and Thomas Howe explain, the writers of the Bible "were not secretaries of the Holy Spirit." Though inspired by God, they were nevertheless "human composers, employing their own literary styles and idiosyncracies." (Geisler, Norman and Thomas Howe. When Critics Ask: A Popular Handbook on Bible Difficulties. Grand Rapids: Baker Books, 2004).

Not only were the writers human writing according to their style and personality, their writing was also influenced by the culture in which they lived as well as their level of education.

What's more, readers of the Bible must also take into account the translation they are reading. The classic and ever popular King James Version, for example, contains words that have changed their meaning over time. For example, in Philippians, Paul tells his readers to "be careful for nothing" (Philippians 4:6, KJV), yet people say "Be careful" to each other all the time today. The reason for this linguistic confusion is that, in 1611 (when the KJV was originally published), the word "careful" meant "full of care" as in "full of worry." Today, it simply means to exercise due caution.

For all these reasons (genre, context, translation, etc.), one must take the time to study the words of the Bible, understanding not simply their meaning to a modern audience, but rather their meaning in the original language and culture of the day they were written. This takes time, and it takes work.

Those wishing to dive into the Bible are no doubt motivated by the prophet Jeremiah's promise: "Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, but whose confidence is in him." (Jeremiah 17:7, NIV).

By understanding the nature of the Bible, fearing God, and investing the time and effort into the Bible which it requires (and deserves), one can begin to read the Bible with understanding and unlock the blessings it has to offer.

7 Tips for Dealing With Difficult People

Dealing with difficult people is one of the most challenging situations everyone faces. These essential people skills can help anyone succeed.

People skills are critical to success in life. As bestselling author John Maxwell writes, "All of life's successes come from initiating relationships with the right people and then strengthening those relationships by using good people skills." Without these skills in place, people will find themselves forever anxious, drained, and overwhelmed when dealing with others.

The challenge is especially great when dealing with difficult people. There are some individuals who have a way of testing patience, introducing difficulty and awkwardness, and getting on that very last nerve. Such people may be present at home, at work, in church, or in the neighborhood. Here are ten tips to help anyone master essential people skills needed not only when faced with difficult situations or people, but in life generally:

Smile - This most basic tip may seem trite, but it is the key to setting the right tone for interaction in any situation. A winning, sincere smile will do more to make a person likable and a situation less confrontational than just about anything else. In addition to the personal benefit of lifting one's own mood, a smile conveys that you are happy to be in the company of the other person, which implicitly suggests that you like the other person. It is very difficult to dislike someone who likes us. You can therefore turn that psychological principle to your advantage by smiling (sincerely and genuinely) when talking with others.Choose Your Attitude- Rosalie Maggio, author of The Art of Talking to Anyone and the How to Say It series, explains: "The art of conversing with anyone begins long before you arrive at wherever you hope to speak charmingly and intelligently....The first step is to choose to be there." While there are some places to which you may not wish to go or situations for which you feel ambiguity at best, working on your attitude is critical to conversation success.Maintain Proper, Balanced Eye Contact- The key is to show interest and engagement in the conversation, without staring the other person down. Keep your mind focused on what the other person is saying, thus minimizing the risk that your face will "fog" over and go into a daze. Also keep your face relaxed. Don't look robotic or forced in either your smile or your eye contact. If you are genuinely interested in what the other person is saying (hint: you choose your level of interest), then this will come off more naturally. It's okay to let your eyes look elsewhere occasionally. In fact, this is a good thing, as it gives you and the other party a 'break' in the conversation and keeps things from becoming a staring contest. It also shows that you're taking the time to process and reflect on what's been said.Use the Other Person's Name - People like to hear the sound of their own name. There's a quasi-affirmation which takes place when a person speaks to another by name. It emphasizes the individuality of the other person and conveys a measure of approval on them.Talk Less and Listen More - The old addage, which says "You were born with one mouth and two ears!," carries much wisdom. The blunt truth is that no one likes or respects someone who completely dominates a conversation or talks more about himself or herself than anyone or anything else. Don't use conversations or the words of others to fuel your self-esteem or sense of importance. Instead, focus on affirming others and learning more about others. Listen more. Talk less.Strive for Understanding - In the course of a conversation, it's easy sometimes to let things fly by without fully engaging or processing them, especially if you're on the defensive. This, however, can come back and bite a person much later. Also, if one is superficially skipping along in a conversation, that detachment will, even if only subconsciously, manifest itself. If the other person says something that you didn't catch or understand, politely ask them to repeat it.Lift People Up - In his bestselling book Winning With People, John Maxwell talks about "The Elevator Principle," a way of remembering that "we can lift people up or take people down in our relationships." To truly "win with people," it's essential that you be one who sincerely and (at times) selflessly lifts others up.

The preceding tips will put anyone on the right track to dealing successfully (or at least more peacefully and effectively) with difficult people, and they will pave the way for general success in relationships.

Why Did Jesus Ask The Rich Young Ruler to Sell All That He Had?

A simple question from the rich young ruler about eternal life gave Jesus Christ an opportunity to teach what it really means to be a Christian.

The Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke all record the famous conversation between Jesus of Nazareth and the rich young ruler in Judeo-Palestine. The significance of this encounter has been written about, debated and preached on for centuries. Was Jesus teaching salvation by works? Is poverty necessary for eternal life? Was Jesus placing too high a standard or burden on the shoulders of a man who seemed genuine and sincere? What can this conversation teach us about the true nature of salvation and following Christ?

The Gospels of Matthew and Mark record that this man who came to Jesus was young and possessed great wealth. The Gospel of Luke adds that he was a "ruler," which most likely places him within the Herodian dynasty. Accordingly, this rich young ruler was probably a Hellenized Jew with great political clout, significant wealth, social esteem and a promising future. Yet this young man, for all his earthly prominence, wanted more. He wanted to live forever.

Impressed by what he had seen and heard of the itinerant Jewish miracle worker and teacher named Jesus of Nazareth, this young man decided to get the answers he sought. When the opportunity presented itself, he very respectfully presented himself to Jesus and asked the question that was at the forefront of his mind.

The nineteenth chapter of the Gospel of Matthew records the encounter as follows:

16 Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?”

17 So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”

18 He said to Him, “Which ones?” Jesus said, “ ‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not bear false witness,’

19 ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’”

20 The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?"

21 Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

When the rich young ruler came to Jesus asking what he must do to inherit eternal life, he was hoping for a different answer than the one he received. When Jesus told him that he’d have to sell all he had to give it to the poor, the young man went away sad. That Jesus called on the man to give up his wealth has been used by some to prove that salvation and eternal life are achieved by good works in this life. Others have argued that poverty is necessary for true salvation. Neither conclusion supported by the text.

Jesus introduces his teaching by first questioning the man's choice of greeting. He asks why the young man calls him "good," and points out that "no one is good," except for God. To prove this, Jesus turns the man's attention to the commandments. The young man seems unable to grasp the entirety of the Mosaic Code and basically asks Jesus which ones are most important. Jesus provides a partial list, bolstering the man's confidence. He almost gleefully announces that he's faithfully kept the ones Jesus mentions. Then, Jesus cuts to the heart. He challenges the young man to give up his wealth and follow him. At this, the young man chooses his wealth over Jesus and goes away sad.

True salvation requires complete repentance and a full confession of Christ. When that takes place, the Holy Spirit takes up residence in the heart (Romans 5:5) and begins a work of regeneration (II Corinthians 5:17) and sanctification (I Corinthians 1:2; I Thessalonians 5:23). This doesn’t mean that Christians are perfect or that they won’t go through periods of rebellion, doubts, or problems. Sanctification doesn’t mean perfection. It means that God is working on us to move us toward perfection, toward holiness.

Yet a follower of Christ must be willing to commit themselves to this journey at the very outset. When Jesus called his disciples, he challenged them to forsake what they had and follow him. It was the same call he gave to the rich young ruler. In the case of the disciples, most of them walked away from very little, at least in terms of worldly possessions. But the rich young ruler had much to walk away from, which is why Jesus says later in Matthew 19 that it's easier for a rich man to pass through the "eye of a needle" than to enter the kingdom of heaven.

The Bible does not record whether the rich young ruler ever changed his mind or regretted his decision. One can be assured, however, that this man couldn't take his wealth, influence, or prestige into the next life. Upon his death, he entered eternity, and the only thing that matters at that stage is one's relationship with God.
