Spring Carpet Care Tips

The spring is here and with it comes extra challenges for you and your carpet. One of the biggest things that comes with spring is spring showers. This extra rainfall can wreak havoc on your flooring, especially your carpet. Don't fear though, because I have some tips that will help you get through the spring season with beautiful and clean carpet.

The most important thing that you can do to protect your home from the extra moisture is to prevent people from tracking it and mud into your home. At the bare minimum, you should have a rug on the inside of every door. If you want to increase your protection, also place one on the outside. This will give people a place to remove the bulk of the mud and soil from their shoes before entering your home. If you really want to protect your floors, insist that people remove their shoes when entering your home. This can be made easier by purchasing a shoe rack to place near your front door. Also, invest in a few extra pairs of flip flops or slides and have then handy.

Another problem that often arises for carpet in the spring from rain is water damage. The extra rain will tax your gutters and roof. Make sure that your roof has no obvious signs of leakage by going into your attic and looking for leaks which will appear as water marks on the underside of the decking. Also look for wet insulation which is a sure sign of a bad roof. Also, look at your gutters and make sure that they are all connected well with no holes. Make sure that they are not clogged with leaves and debris and are able to flow water effectively. Be sure to fix any problems that you find before the weather hits.

If you encounter a problem caused by water or mud, do not panic. They can be easily addressed. Mud should be left to dry on your carpet and vacuumed out later. If you attempt to clean it before it dries, you will make a bigger mess. in most cases dry mud will come completely out with a vacuum and a little agitation. If you get a water leak in your home from a bad gutter or roof, you want to vacuum up the water as thoroughly as possible with a shop vac. Then place a fan on the area and leave it there until it is completely dry. Larger leaks may require the use of a professional so keep your carpet cleaners number handy.

Hopefully these tips will help to get you through the spring season with beautiful and clean carpets. Without your carpets to worry about, you should be free to get out there and enjoy the spring weather.
